“The Horse Does All the Work…”

How often have we heard that one? Even our best friends and family members will tease us with it from time to time. Well, the horse does do a lot of the work, but non-riders underestimate the physical and mental skills demanded of equestrian sport. The effort it takes to ride well is no less than for other extreme sports, and as competitive athletes, we know that fitness matters a great deal.

Equestrians are athletes. The leg strength and aerobic fitness required by the rider to get a horse around a course is like the demands of cross country running.

Consider the sheer toughness it takes to compete in equestrian sport:

Our “teammate” is a half-ton animal with a mind of its own. We jump obstacles, sometimes our height or greater, frequently coming at them at speed. We cannot speak to our partner; we communicate through our body and our mind. The thin line of trust between us and our horse can be broken in an instant, with potentially disastrous results.

Giving our teammate the correct signals and keeping our posture in the saddle while moving at speed and over jumps is incredibly demanding physically. We train with our partner over days, weeks and years to hone our trust and perfect the smallest technique. If an accident or injury occurs, both we and our horse can develop incapacitating fears that must be overcome through training and mental toughness. Building (or rebuilding) mutual trust for riding requires extraordinary commitment for both rider and horse.

For the competitive equestrian, fitness is not merely a desire, it’s a necessity.

Equestrians are athletes. The leg strength and aerobic fitness required by the rider to get a horse around a course well is like the demands of cross country running. If you’ve never viewed yourself as an athlete, consider the core strength needed to correctly enter, maintain, and exit the two-point position when jumping your horse.

Of course, most of us do not compete at the Grand Prix or Olympic levels. But good fitness is no less important. In horse sports, we are fortunate that we can start riding at almost any level of fitness. The basics of sitting on and enjoying the experience can be had without having to take to the gym. But, as with most things, there comes a point where “just” riding is no longer enough. To continue to improve, our fitness outside of the arena must be a priority.

If you wish to become more fit and improve your riding, what kind of approach is best? The answer is the one that you will actually do, of course! While anything you enjoy doing can help, cross training is generally considered the easiest way to strengthen riding muscles while increasing endurance in the saddle. A good cross training program balances strength, cardio, and flexibility for all around fitness. Becoming more fit also brings benefits such as being more mindful about diet. (Even if that does go out the window at the horse show!)

So, if you have yet to make the commitment to yourself — and to your horse — to become more fit, saddle up! Speak to your doctor or health professional before beginning a serious exercise program, but if you’ve got the green light, go for it. You will look and feel great, your riding will improve, and the next time you hear that comment you’ll have even more reason to smile and say, “Oh, really?”

Making Your Showing Experience Easier

At Cascade Horse Shows, we work hard to ensure that your showing experience is as rewarding as possible. That not only means creating a fun and exciting atmosphere at our shows, but also making it easier for you (or your trainer) to sign up for the essentials that make your visit to the Washington State Horse Park in Cle Elum memorable.

Reserve your golf cart now! Image by Gary Voth

That’s why we are proud to unveil our new online reservation forms. These forms make it easier than ever to:

  1. Reserve your RV space
  2. Reserve a golf car for the show
  3. Order hay, feed, and shavings for your stalls
  4. Sign up for official show photography

Best of all, you can do all of this right from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, without having to download, print, or fax us anything!

When you use our online forms you’ll receive a convenient confirmation email summarizing your order.

Reminder: Get your forms in early, as our RV spaces and golf cars always sell out quickly!

Of course, for those of you who prefer it, we still have our traditional PDF forms available, and you will find these via convenient links from the online forms themselves, and from our great new Competitor Portal.  We’ve even enhanced our PDF forms this year: all of them are “fillable”, meaning you can enter data into the forms themselves using Adobe Reader or other compatible software, and then email the finished version to us if you choose.

These are just some of the ways we are working to make your experience with Cascade Horse Shows even better. We look forward to seeing you all in Cle Elum!

Cascade Circuit Cup - USHJA HUNTER DERBY

Presented by Brick Road Farms

ALOHA
Owned by CHRISTY LARSON
Ridden by SHANNON HENDRICKSON

Images by Gary Voth

Cascade hunter derbies are unique in that they span two rings, they challenge the horse and rider to jump a series of 3′ to -3’3” natural obstacles demonstrating brightness and pace covering the ground in a relaxed, smooth and proficient way. Aloha, the 7 year old Hanoverian/Thoroughbred mare, did just that across all four Brick Road Farm’s USHJA Hunter Derbies this season; winning the final derby with first place performances in both the classic and handy rounds.  Thank you Carol Hinckley of Brick Road Farms for sponsoring this wonderful year-end award.

Congratulations again Christy Larson & Shannon Hendrickson on Aloha’s win!

Cascade Circuit Cup -HUNTER 3' AND UP

GRAFFITI
Owned and Ridden by KELSEY KING

Images by Gary Voth

To win this award you had to have an impressive showing in a variety of classes, demonstrating beautiful hunter form over fences and under saddle.

Graffiti, the big chestnut gelding with the spray-paint markings befitting his name and rider Kelsey King did just that winning the Children’s/Adult Hunter Classic, top amateur placing in the USHJA Hunter Derby. And although it didn’t count towards this award being a good sport while Kelsey carried a glass of Rose’ to a fifth place finish pretty much secured his place in Kelsey’s heart.  Thank you to all our extraordinary sponsors who made this award possible: Jamie Kosele of PNW Stubben Saddles, Shelly Kerron of Legacy Hunters & Jumpers, Carol Hinckley of Brick Road Farms, Kimberly Tenhulzen of Tenhulzen Real Estate, Mike Akers with Olson’s Tack Shop.

Congratulations Kelsey King on Graffiti’s win!

Cascade Circuit Cup - JUMPER 1.10 AND UP

CUPIDO T
Owned and Ridden by JULIA HODGES

In some circles earning the right to wear to wear whites is tied to jumping 1.10m and above. Its when you’re considered to have hit the big time with big jumps to match. All of the competitors vying for this award have earned their right to wear whites. But its Cupido T the 11 year old warmblood gelding and Julia Hodges who took home the Cascade Circuit Cup with first or second placings in all the 1.10 and Modified Jr./Amateur Jumper classes they competed in, including the High Children’s Jumpers, presented by Ansara Patterson of Geneva Financial.

Thank you to all the fabulous sponsors behind this award: Eve Willett with Red Pony Insurance, Abbie Block with Absolute Horse, Debbie Dillon with Horseware of Ireland, Lori Houston with Whittier Trust, Lindsey Spurgeon with Voltaire Design and Ansara Patterson of Geneva Financial.

Images by Gary Voth

You’ve got to be fast, clear and completely in the zone to be the winner of the Cascade Circuit Cup JUMPERS Up To 1.05. And you’ve got to believe that neither size nor age will stop you from taking the win. Morton’s the Celebrity AKA Small and Mighty, Wonder Pony, and Rusty to his friends has absolutely no idea that he is 12.1 hands, 17 years old and is supposed to have a pony stride. And then there is Sahale who is only 10 years old but rides like a seasoned pro.  The pair won almost every class they entered and was on the gold medal winning team of the Cascade Jumper Team Championships.

Thank you to all the phenomenal sponsors behind this award: Lindsey Spurgeon with Voltaire Design, Morgan Carr with Encanto Valley Farm, and Kimberly Tenhulzen with Tenhulzen Real Estate and Katherine Wade-Easley with Sundance Equestrian

Cascade Circuit Cup - HUNTER UP TO 2'9

CARLTON K
Owned and Ridden by ELISE LOMBARDI

Images by Holly Casner

The 9 year old Holsteiner gelding Carlton K impressed the judges across the 2’9″ hunter division all season long. But it was his and Elise Lombardi’s winning round in the Open Hunter Classic, presented by Signature West Farms that pinned him champion of the Cascade Circuit Cup Hunters Up to 2’9″. This was the most closely contested of all the circuit cup awards. We couldn’t tabulate the winner until the very last class of the day pinned because there was only a few points difference in the top five placings. But at the end of the day it was all Carlton K!

Thank you to all the wonderful sponsors behind this award: Dianna Connelly Insurance Services, Kelsey King of American Mechanical Corp and Mikie Tracey Shepler with Ride the Ducks of Seattle. Lindsey Spurgeon with Voltaire Design, The Grange of Issaquah, Rocking ‘E’ Feeds and Denise Youell of Farpoint Farms,

Announcing the Cascade Circuit Cup Awards

Success in any aspect of horse sports takes courage, commitment and a good bit of horse sense. The courage to trust your horse; the commitment to keep improving; the sense to know that these qualities matter most in showing. All of us at Cascade Horse Shows recognize that it takes similar courage and commitment whether competing in the 2’3” hunters or the 1.30m jumpers or any height in between.

It is with this spirit that we proudly announce the Cascade Circuit Cup Awards: championship awards bestowed upon the horses accumulating the most points in one of five categories over the full Cascade Horse Shows 2018 circuit:  Swiftwater Invitational, Alpine Preview, Pacific Crest Open, and Cascade Finals. And because every class at every height is included in points tallying, every horse is a contender.
